AUGUST 2010
SABBATICAL

It is with regret that I lay down my pen, because as many of you know I have been writing a newsletter faithfully for the church website since March of 2003.

I have been critical of some events and actions over the years and I have used parody and cartoons and perhaps a little sarcasm effectively along the way; however, I have always been truthful and commented fairly. I have avoided hearsay, and I have always erred on the side of honesty. I have recognized that while the truth may not be popular, it remains The Truth.

By the time you read this, I will have turned 65 and I guess that officially places me in the winter of my years: years which I do not wish to be 'the winter of my discontent' to misquote the Bard and the much maligned Richard III. As most of you know, I am a volunteer here at Saint Mary Magdalene; and as I traded disability payments [I have type 2 diabetes and cardiac arrhythmia] for work last September; payments which have now ceased, I suppose I am officially unemployed. Thank God for Senior's Pharmacare, otherwise I could not afford any medications.

federal overtaxation I have determined to spend some time with my children ages 9, 6 and 4 and see to their education. This will free up Reverend Josephine [somewhat] from the onerous task of home schooling, and who knows may cast her into the role of breadwinner. We certainly expect hard times: my Canadian Pension Plan and Old Age Security [CPP and OAS] amount to some $700 per month, and at the time of writing I await a decision from Service Canada about the Guaranteed Income Supplement [GIS] which I pray will be favourable. Canada Revenue Agency [CRA] is, as they say, another kettle of fish! After giving me a brutal run-around since December of last year, which even brought me a nice letter from Minister of Revenue James Flaherty, CRA have staunchly refused to reconsider their refusal to provide Candian Child Tax Benefits [CCTB], HST refunds and the provincial equivilants for my three children: this because they base all decisions on outdated information about taxable earnings. In truth, there probably isn't an abundance of pensioners with young kids, but does that mean my children should suffer? Due to CRA's decision, my kids will not see a penny until July 2011. I have to say that the people I spoke to showed little compassion or concern. One agent even told me quite bluntly to go to Welfare.

So, I look forward to beginning a final career as an impoverished educator: there are no tax breaks on home schooling by the way, so having paid taxes for decades to educate other people's kids [especially the children of CRA employees] I have to do it alone, or send them to a school where 'snitches get stiches' and most street drugs are freely available in the playground. In the meantime, I am going to ask the Web Servant to create an archive for my past letters within one of our websites and I will continue to help out as a volunteer priest when the church needs me, and [just for the record] I am definately NOT saying that I will not write again.

For now, I want to spend time with my children:
a worthy goal for every parent!

Hasta luego y vaya con Dios!

Malachy

NEWSLETTERS:

taking on the system

"And now this admonition is for you, O priests. If you do not listen, and if you do not set your heart to honour my name," says the LORD Almighty... And you will know that I have sent you this admonition so that my covenant with Levi may continue," says the LORD Almighty. "My covenant was with him, a covenant of life and peace, and I gave them to him; this called for reverence and he revered me and stood in awe of my name. True instruction was in his mouth and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with me in peace and uprightness, and turned many from sin. "For the lips of a priest ought to preserve knowledge, and from his mouth men should seek instruction - because he is the messenger of the LORD Almighty. But you have turned from the way and by your teaching have caused many to stumble; you have violated the covenant with Levi," says the LORD Almighty.
